Preamble: The Organization The organization was conceptualized in the aftermath of a tragic domestic violence incident in rural Kisumu, Kenya, where a woman, Margaret Wanzuu (Time, May 10, 1999 - attached) lost her life at the hands of her husband. The Margaret Wanzu Foundation Organization (MWFO) was founded in 1997 and was officially registered in Kenya on September 1999 as non-profit, non-governmental, non-partisan organization. Due to sustainability issues, it stopped working actively in 2010. Later in 2013 was re-activated and officially re-registered as a Community Based Organization. MWFO is a founder member of Kenya MenEngage Alliance (KEMEA) and is currently chairs the Steering Committee that manages its resources and supervises member activities.

Working within a human rights framework, MWFO aims to promote and advocate for the rights of Girls and women to live free fair lives without fear of gender-based violence or discrimination. The Foundation is grassroots located and takes particular exception to focus on culturally induced and socially accepted types of violence

and discrimination such as, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Early/Child Marriages, Forced Widow Inheritance and Domestic Violence (DV). These traditional practices are some of the root causes of GBV that relegate girls and women to second class citizens without basic human rights, adversely their health and wellbeing and impediments their personal and social development.
